Saturday's Photo Hunt: Circular

Look at this beautiful freshly cut wood pile filled with all those circular wood stumps.

This must have been from two winters ago. I love how nice and neatly stacked the pile was and the beautiful tan, light brown color of the freshly cut wood. Angie, my cat, spent days sniffing and hanging out on the wood pile. I'm sure there were other curious cats in the neighborhood that she was sniffing but part of it was the joy of being outdoors in the warm sun on a winter day.

Angie's tail is all high and perky indicating her pure pleasure and curiosity. How old do you think those trees were Angie?

Understanding Exposure by Iberionex Perello

I often find myself taking far to many shots trying to find the right exposure rather than having a better understanding of it to begin with. Iberionex is one of the instructors from BetterPhoto.com who has a podcast series on light in photography.
I just love how he "sees" the light in his photos and how he explains it.

This is a wonderful house to gather in for the holidays and other fun events through the year with family and friends. 99% of the time my photos are taken inside but for some reason I got the idea to take the photo from the outside looking in. My husband and I are thankful every day for this awesome house. We were initially drawn to it in the Fall season when the warmth of the colors of the golds and reds of the falling leaves left a glowing carpet surrounding the house. Added to that was the warm glow of the golden wall panels that made us fall in love with the house right then. These warm and inviting rooms have made it a cozy place to entertain and gather together.

Finally had time to put this up and it's so appropriate as to what's going on in CT and the Northeast US today.

The bizarre snowstorm in CT has broken my favorite tree to take photos of. See the limb on the lower right corner?

Here's what it looks like in the Spring. Now that lower limb is all broken. :-(

This storm is really crazy. We have six plus inches of snow already today and it's supposed to snow all night plus get winds around 40 mph. The leaves hadn't even fallen off of the trees yet so they are all so heavy and are snapping branches off all kinds of trees left and right.

You can see in the back of my next door neighbor's yard some branches that have broken off his trees. Just about a 1/2 hr ago another HUGE limb broke off of another tree and his whole yard is covered with broken tree limbs now. It is really important to take care of trees that are rotting and make sure you trim what you can. It's not easy to keep up with all of them if you are surrounded by trees but with the crazy weather we have had this year it was all stressful for the trees.

End of a Pair

The last burst of beauty for my Kniphofia plant. This last pair didn't last long and they stayed a lighter color, very little of that pretty orangey red they were earlier in the season. These are my favorite new flowers and I am looking forward to adding some more to my spring garden.

The Public lined up and waiting to get into a Packers Football game in Green Bay, WI. This was just one of the lines. Packer's fans are some of the most well mannered, friendly, nicest people I have ever met! It was pure pleasure to be at a Green Bay Packer's game and be able to just enjoy the game and the people around us. They sure know how to have a great time!

This is just the WRONG food to eat on a diet where you want to lose weight! And I believe desserts that look this yummy is why so many people find it so hard to go on a diet to begin with. That said, this lovely, heavenly, ice cream concoction was at a ice cream/dessert restaurant in Little Italy in Baltimore, MD. Sorry I can't remember the name but I'll never forget how incredible that dessert looked. Now you can drool over it too!

Photo Hunt - Drink

My first thought for drink was wine of course... but I decided to go for something just as healthy and tasty in a different way. This is a glass of Green Goddess juice. How do you like the look of that drink? It's a mixture of cucumbers, zucchini, lots of spinach, pineapple, green apples, and a lime. The lime gives it that great limey kick and makes it thirst quenching to me as well. It's all run through the juicer and then I pour it over ice in a nice glass. Voila! Drink up!

I don't know too much about juicing, so if anyone does this a lot can you tell me what the true benefit of it is? It just seems strange to me that you take all that wonderful pulp out of the food to make a juice when it seems that the pulp is what is really good for your system. Any thoughts?

One lone bicyclist on one of the hottest days of the Summer on the shores of Lake Michigan. This was taken on Tuesday, August 2 at the Northwestern University campus in Evanston, IL. That white sky was the haze from the clouds and humidity. At least she was getting a little breeze riding her bike in that hot sticky air!

Still life with Flypaper textures added

I have seen some beautiful photos reworked with the "Flypaper" texture Summer Painterly series added to the original. I love the effects and finally had the time to buy the pack.

The upper left photo has the Nuriel Clouds and Brushed Rose textures added in Photoshop. I used a combination of multiply and color burn and added a mask to one layer to lighten up the vase a little. I did not want to bring it all the way back to the whiteness of the original but rather keep that same tone from the Nuriel Clouds texture. I only added the two textures because I like to keep things simple. Sometimes less is more.

Backwards - Photo Hunt

This turkey is looking backwards at me. It is amazing the eyesight these buggers have. He can see me move over 50 feet away, through the slightly tinted windows in my house. And he can hear well too. So it's hard to sneak up on him to get a decent photo. I managed to get this shot through the windows at the back of the house with my Tamron 28-300mm lens. The cats, Beau Beau and Angie, have been chasing him when they have been outside. Other than that, they are entertained by watching him stroll by the windows early in the morning.

Independence Day Design

I took a photo of the outside of a restaurant in Bar Harbor, ME a few years ago. It had a flag on it and a bunch of bouy's hanging all over it. This was the same time that I had discovered how to create "amazing circles" in Photoshop. That's how my photo turned into this interesting shape. Fourth of July in America reminds me of the American flag of course, lobsters, New England and Maine in particular. Plus being on vacation reminds me of freedom and what Independence Day is all about.

Trying to get a self portrait for my avatar for facebook was not as easy as I thought. Actually none of the photos I took of myself came out the way I liked. I tried a couple places with different lighting. This photo is with my fireplace as a background with lighting coming through the windows. I tried another with my white background and the 580EXII flash and those didn't do so well either. Time to practice a little more with the strobes so I can improve my portrait ability.

Coyote Blue in Sedona

There's some talk about Coyote and other animals coming closer to humans and houses because of all this crazy snowy weather we're having. This guy has his winter coat on but I was told that he looks pretty good for December, not all scraggly or anything. He must have known to fatten up before this cold winter in anticipation. I used the Pixel Bender filter on this photo to soften it up a little, plus the photo wasn't as tack sharp as I would have liked so the pixel bender helps.

Snow wreck

Took this from the train with my little Fujifilm S000 finepix P&S somewhere in NY or NJ off the Amtrak line. It was from the last big storm on 1/26. Sometimes that camera gets some pretty good shots! It does not like bright photos at all though. It just blacks out. This photo is also as is. It was snowing and overcast but it came out with no color whatsoever.

January 21, 2011 snow storm in Connecticut. Snow crystal photo taken on blue felt. I'm still getting the feel for getting the focus right on the snowflakes. Typically the sky is pretty gray while it's snowing and the light is low. I'm using a 60mm lens with one extender, my Manfrotto Tripod, and a remote shutter release. I'm still getting blurry snow crystals yet they are getting better each time.

While everyone in the area is already getting tired of the snow, I can't wait for the next storm to try some more photos!

The leaves are finally changing in Connecticut. This image is the North Farms Reservoir, a popular spot for swans and fisherman. The swans were not cooperating this morning though. They were all huddled together on the other side of the lake. What started out as a raw morning ended up turning into a beautiful 70 degree sunny day.

Have you ever seen a more beautiful blue in your whole life? Man, can I see myself in that car. Just beautiful. It looks so familiar to me for some reason. Hmmm. Just a past dream perhaps? Ok and I will critique myself further, I didn't have time to crop the people out. Oh well, I just couldn't wait to get this blue out there!

I woke up one morning last week to a foggy day. The first thought in my mind was to grab the camera and run out to the local reservoir because it's a great place for mood shots with that fog. As the sun lifted the fog what I found was a spider web wonderland. This one spider was pretty busy making this huge web. I never knew there were so many webs out there until the moisture settled on them and brought them all to light. Amazing.

Learning Lighting for Photography

I just received an email from a previous Better Photo instructor, John Siskin, with yet more information about lighting. It reminded me to post some pictures from his BetterPhoto.com class that I took a couple months ago "Getting Started in Commercial Photography". John is a great instructor and gives out a wealth of information! He also appeals to the Yankee in me in that he had all kinds of tips for how to make inexpensive equipment to use for lighting. I even made my own light panel from materials from a hardware store. Making your own stuff helps to offset the costs for strobes. It may seem like I'm really promoting BetterPhoto and in a sense I am only because I have enjoyed the classes so much and gotten so much out of them.

The photo above was for the Architectural Photography assignment and the end result after many hours of experimenting with different setups, different times of day, and use of different lights in order to finally get something that I felt had the right balance with the light outside and the lighting inside. With the amount of vertical and horizontal lines in the shot it made it even more challenging. I had one Alien Bee 1600 set up from the upper level to light the back window wall trim and one Speedlght 580EX II off to the left lighting out towards the fireplace. It seems like it would be so simple to light that space but it wasn't. I have an entirely new perspective for lighting and a new interest in a part of photography I never thought of before. It ties my love of interiors and art and architecture with photography.

My new Sigma 10-22mm lens was really helpful in getting the expanse of the room and so useful for architectural work and lots of other work. What a fun lens this is. Another item crossed off my list. These classes help to spur me to get more of the equipment I need.

The Universe IS listening

In late May while I was driving to Maine on vacation to Bar Harbor, my husband and I created a list of inspirational ideas and dreams of what we would like to do and where we'd like to be in our lives. On my list was to take a photography workshop vacation.

Azalea Reflections in Maine

Since I had already taken a couple online classes through Betterphoto.com with Tony Sweet as the instructor I thought I'd start there. I believe in going with your gut and when something you want almost makes you cry you know you're onto something. That's why I took my first class with Tony, "Image Design: Revealing your Personal Vision." I love his work and style and wanted to further my experience under his guidance. Checking into his workshop he had a workshop for Acadia, ME. Acadia is a photographers paradise with the rocky coast, the water, mountains, etc. Taking the class would not only help me refine my skills, but be inspirational and motivational in helping me with courage in taking the next step in making photography my second career. It's one thing to go on vacation and take pictures, but another to take a vacation from work to take design images. You can focus on your photography and not have to worry about missing out on your actual vacation.

The class was listed as full on Tony's website. It also says to sign up anyway for the wait list because people drop out. I signed up and I asked how many people were ahead of me. Twenty-two people were ahead! Looking at this two ways, positively and negatively, I first thought no way, there is no way 22 people are going to drop out. But you have to believe. So many things have happened to me in the past eight years that all point to you get what you think about. I figured I would give it my best and believe that I was going. I put the dates on my calendar at work for vacation time. I gave up going on a trip to Turks and Caicos with friends, not only because of this workshop but for other reasons. If you believe you are going you have to act as if you are going. I stopped thinking about it and thought it will happen if it's meant to happen.

The time is getting closer so I wanted to check to see how I was moving up on the list. I was thinking maybe half of them dropped out and I'd be 11th. The number 11 has big significance with me so if anything I thought that would be the number. It wasn't. It was 2. TWO! I am TWO spots away from going on the workshop! Wow. The Universe is listening.

Summer Food

What reminds us more of a yummy, fun filled food day in the Summer than watermelon? 1 cup of diced watermelon contains approximately calories. It's loaded with vitamin C and vitamin A. Pink watermelon is also a source of the potent carotenoid antioxidant, lycopene. It is high in sugar, 10g per cup, so it's not what you'd eat on a low carb diet, but it's also loaded with water (about 92% worth) so it's good to keep hydrated on a hot summer day. Enjoy!

New Photography Course

I just signed up for another photography course through ( BetterPhoto.com "4-Week Short Course: An Introduction to Photographic Lighting" online course). I've taken a few online courses through them already and I love the format. It forces me to get out and take pictures and learn, learn, learn! It's really great to meet new people from all over the world and see the creativity and how people develop their skills even in a short 4 week course. I like the 8 week courses better, only because you get more time to develop more, but this lighting course I wanted to get me motivated to make my light box, and to learn how to light up a subject and whatever else. It's easy to just go out and shoot whatever interests you with the flash you have, but lighting is probably one of the most important aspects of photography. Too much and you create glare, and too much white and make people's faces look washed out. Too little and just everything goes wrong. Just look at how artistic painting evolved. When the artists learned about and brought in light it changed the whole way paintings look. Just look at a "Caravaggio" painting and how he focused on lighting a subject and you'll see what I mean.

I'm looking forward to posting some pics here as I go through the course.

Photo Hunt - Fresh

Today's photo hunt didn't take long for me to remember this yummy dish. This is FRESH mozzarella over broccoli rabe at Becco Restaurant in NYC. Look at that puffy cloud of cheese. I can remember the silky, creaminess of the cheese. There was just enough spice and salt sprinkled on the top with a piece of toasted italian bread under it and then the broccoli rabe resting on the bottom. Some wonderful aromatic olive oil was drizzled over the top. Geez, I wish I lived closer to NYC because I'd be running back there right now to get another one.

Vertical Valentine's Day

Went to New York City for Valentine's Day to have lunch at Becco. For some reason all these lines just happened to jump out at me begging for a photo.

The picture with the cables was in front of the Mercedes Benz Fashion Show this week. That looks like a lot of power!

Also took a quick side trip to visit the International Center of Photography Museum. Might be something to explore a little further on a different day. All I have to say about the Miroslav Tichy exhibit was that it was a little creepy. I just couldn't get what it was all about. But then again, it made me realize that you can make images of anything, pull it all together, and someone, somewhere, will think the collection is worth showing to the world.

February Snowflakes

These are the kinds of spindle-like snow flakes that fell in the snowstorm we had in Connecticut yesterday, February 10, 2010. We were supposed to get somewhere around 15 inches. I think we might have gotten five inches. I was looking forward to examining some of the beautiful flakes that can be seen and all I saw all day where these pointy crystals. I'm just wondering what the snow crystals looked like in the areas south of us in New Jersey, and down to Baltimore, MD.

While others are hoping the snow will stop, I'm hoping we get more so I can take a look at more crystals.

Photo Hunt: Average

These are average sized Pumpkin Cookies with Cinnamon Frosting. They are about a 2 to 3 inches in diameter. Although, there is an over-average amount of cinnamon in the frosting. You can see all the cinnamon spread throughout the frosting.

Use any recipe for Pumpkin Cookies. I made a couple of different recipes. These came out cake like so they were easy to frost. I think next time I will use a pastry bag and pipe the frosting on nicely. It was hard to make these look pretty just using a knife to spread the frosting on.

Here's the recipe for the frosting:

1 stick of butter softened
4 cups of confectioners’ sugar
1/4 cup of milk
1 or 2 tsp. vanilla extract (I like a lot of vanilla so I use two tsp.)
1 to 2 tsp. of ground cinnamon

-- Beat butter in bowl with a mixer until smooth.
-- Add confectioners sugar, milk, vanilla and cinnamon.
-- Mix until creamy scraping the bowl often.
-- Frost the cookies when cool.

If you like cinnamon, these cookies are great.

January Snow

Instead of worrying about how the roads were with the snow on them, I decided to ride around and take some early morning snow shots at the golf course across the street from my house. I could have walked of course, but I thought I'd take a few photos from the warmth of the car. Plus then I can use the window as a way to prop the camera.

There are a lot of firsts for me with photography and this is one of them. First night time snow photo. Wide open lens to capture any light. The available light was from the lamp post. I was also testing the camera to see how well it would do in 30 degree weather. My main objective is to take pictures of snowflakes. This wet snow was not the kind of snowflake that works. It was fun taking the pictures in it though!

As always, looking for something interesting on walks in the woods especially on vacation. This is a curved root of a tree that I captured while on Mt. Desert Island in Maine. This was right on the side of an easy hiking/bike path. I'm sure lots of others have take photos of this before me. Nature is amazing isn't it?

New Class New Technique

Day 3 in Bar Harbor, ME. Took a trip to the Thuya Gardens on Mount Desert Island in Maine. Lovely gardens and terraces. This photo is an attempt to shoot through flowers. It's a technique for this weeks assignment in the class I'm taking in Better Photo.com, an eight week class on flower photos. This is a lot harder than I thought it would be. This one didn't make it for an actual upload to the course because I could not get the back flower as defined as I wanted it to be. Still, I like the colors with all that yellow and you can kind of tell that a flower is in the background.

Bar Harbor Sunrise

Bar Harbor, Maine, a photographers paradise. Woke up and saw the beginning of a beautiful morning sky. Since we were staying at the Ullikani Inn right across from the bay it was easy to jump out of bed and head over to the edge of the water to set up for some shots. I didn't even realize I had the opportunity for the sunrise until I was right there. Took just a few and was hoping for another morning of it but there haven't been too many clear days this year up here either and it seems that the next few days will be cloudy as well. Glad I got to just see it nevermind take a picture of it.

Also, as I uploaded my photos of the day I realized I have a big dust spot inside the camera. It's not on the mirror, it's on the opposite side where you are not supposed to clean it unless you are 1) very brave, 2) very experienced, or 3) very stupid and inexperienced. Guess which one I am? Cameras and wine do not mix, LOL! Well at least I can laugh about it. If I had the top of the line Canon I don't think I'd be laughing though. I probably wouldn't have dared to go inside the camera either.

Pear Tree Blossoms

What's more beautiful than these Callery Pear trees blossoming in Spring? These showy white blossoms don't last long and they liven up the streets with their whiteness. It's the smell that is so strange. It's an overwhelming fragrance and to some it smells wonderful and to others it smells horrible. I overheard comments the other day at church while we were waiting for the service to start. When one of the Deacon's said she couldn't stand the smell I was surprised. And lo and behold, at the end of service the smell had turned and it wasn't so pleasant after all. They are still so beautiful though!

December 12th Full Moon

On December 12th, 2008 the full Moon loomed larger in the sky than it has since 1993. It entered its full phase, its disc appeared completely illuminated by the Sun, just four hours after reaching its closest point to Earth.

I missed taking any pictures of it at the beginning of the night but got my first moon picture ever the next morning. I know, I know, I wasn't using the tripod. It was enough for me to realize that the moon was looking pretty good at 6 something AM . I had just woken up, saw the moonlight, grabbed the camera and a sweater and ran outside in the freezing New England morning. I wasn't thinking of the tripod but just wanted to capture what I could before the dawn light took away the dark sky.

I used my Canon XTi Digital Rebel. Didn't do anything special, 6.4 aperture, 200 iso with my Tamron zoom lens out to 300mm. I tried to frame it as best as I could without it being to busy. There wasn't much open space and I was still in my pajamas so I wasn't about to run around the neighborhood looking for a better shot. That's the down side to getting that few minutes window of opportunity for those golden hour shots. Maybe the next full moon I will be better prepared.

Yale - Princeton Game Nov 15

Well, I learned how to protect my camera by using a bag tied around the body and the lens and I made sure I had a microfiber cloth to wipe away the rain. That didn't help me to get clean shots though. The weather went from raining to misting to just cloudy back to rainy again. What I wasn't prepared for was the low light situation making the photos come out as blurred as they did. Since I'm still pretty much a newbie I made the mistake of relying on the sports action mode. It just didn't have a fast enough shutter speed to capture the action clearly.
I tried some other shots with an increased shutter speed but still didn't get what I was looking for. I did like how the football on the ground came out though! Hah!
They didn't all come out this shaky but I wanted to show what happened.

Yale - Columbia Game Nov 1

My latest fun with the camera is taking photos at any football game my husband drags me to. He watches the game, I watch through the lens. This is quite different than all the landscape/nature/fall photography I've been shooting for the last couple of months.
Instead of playing around with all the aperature and shutter speed settings I let the camera go on it's own and just set it on sports mode. Took all the guesswork out of it and I just shot randomly where I thought something was happening. The next game I'm going to I'll use a few more tips I picked up from some online sports photography searches. One thing that I read is that it is important to know the game to anticipate some of the action. Knowing nothing about football I just had fun going with pure instinct and seeing what I came up with.

Fall in Connecticut

I'm taking an online photography class called Image Design through betterphoto.com. It's teaching me how to develop my own personal vision through photography. Now I am enjoying this fall and taking a ton of pictures not only to try and capture photos for the class but for the sheer beauty of New England in the Fall. This photo is a picture alongside the bottom of Talcott Mountain State Park in Connecticut. It was a beautiful quiet morning and I got a picture through the trees. I softened the effect around the trees with Photoshop to give it a softer feeling.

These are the views from Gouveia Vineyards in Wallingford CT. I went there recently on a photo hunt to look for pictures to take for a photography class I'm in. It was also a night for a social gathering for work so it served two purposes - fun and more fun!
This first photo is overlooking the pond on the property and some of the rows of grapes . What a lovely place to sit on the dock and have a picnic.
This photo is taken from the patio area overlooking this front side of the building and some more grape fields towards Wallingford. This was one of those last hazy days of Summer. The wine there is pretty good too.

Roadway bike path for the Quinnipiac River Linear Trail in Wallingford CT. It's a linear park path through the woods on the banks of the Quinnipiac River. It's a place to go for some in town nature and exercise. The Quinnipiac river was a place that native Indian tribes lived along 500 years ago. Now we can walk along the trail and enjoy the river and nature as they once did.

Who says food can't be beautiful? Look at those beautiful fresh organic red raspberries. They looked too good to eat. And that muffin was right out of the oven and the sugar lemon zest topping had just been drizzed over the top. Beautiful! Oh my - my mouth is watering just thinking about how good it was. This food was also from our trip to Bar Harbor ME this past July. We stayed at the Yellow House B&B. Every morning we had something equally as beautiful to eat. It's part of what makes our vacations so wonderful. It's all about the food with us!

Love the color of the edging in this bathing suit top that was left hanging in this chickee hut on the beach in Aruba. Someone had a good time the night before and I took advantage of posing Wally, our Red Sox troll in the top. The colors are pretty happy don't you think?

Darker than I wanted when I made the shot. This is the beautiful window area leading up the stairs at the Ulikana Inn in Bar Harbor, ME. My DH and I stayed there this July. Not only is there artwork all over the inn but the Inn is a piece of art itself.

First post and one from my favorite place in the world, Aruba. This was a sunset wedding at the Bucuti Resort in May, 2008. One might hope for a stunning sunset with a drifting cloud or two but it looks so nice to have all that color in the sky.
